Upload 3D models to Facebook

How to upload 3D models to Facebook

Before you get started, make sure you are using the right file format, [modelname].glb. There are three ways you can upload a 3D model to Facebook.

  1. Share a link to a web page that has Facebook’s Open Graph Sharing metadata tags.
  2. Share a local asset on an Android device using Android’s native Sharing action.
  3. Drag and drop your asset into Facebook’s Post composer and publish it.

Our preferred method is the third one, because it is as easy as 1,2,3!

Share a link to a web page that has Facebook’s Open Graph Sharing metadata tags

Open Graph was introduced by Facebook to allow integration between Facebook and its user data and a website. By using meta tags into your website’s content, you can set which elements of your page you want shown when the page is shared.

So how does it work. Add the following metadata properties to your webpage’s header:

  • og:type — Your 3D asset’s type. Set this to threed.asset.
  • og:asset — Your 3D asset’s URL. Can be relative or absolute.
  • og:title — (optional) Your 3D asset’s title. If you do not add this, the web page’s <title> is used instead.

Drag and drop your asset into Facebook's Post composer and publish it

This is by far the easiest method to share your 3D models in Facebook. By simply dragging and dropping the file into the Facebook composer, the 3D model is recognized and ready for upload.

First click the composer, so it is focusses on writing a post.

Then drag and drop your 3D model into the composer, Facebook will start loading the file.

When this is done, you are ready to post it to your page/timeline. Ofcourse, in the near future, the 3D models posts can also be promoted to increase your reach!
